UPDATE: August 29, 2022

At long last the latest BA.2/BA.5 Covid surge is on a decline in the Bay Area, with case rates dropping by half over the past month, a trend corroborated by local wastewater data which show a drop of more than 85% from the peak last May.

Beginning on Sunday, September 4, we are planning to discontinue both our mask and vaccination requirements. This will be welcome news for many of our dancers, while creating concern for some.

For the concerned group we'd like to remind you that while we cannot eliminate risk completely, we have taken a data- and science-based approach to making our decisions, and we continue to employ measures and recommendations to live with Covid as safely and as comfortably as we can:

  • We have arguably the best-ventilated and best-filtrated club in San Francisco, and are beefing up our HEPA-13 filtration even further.
  • Masks are still strongly recommended. We expect many of our attendees will continue wearing a mask. Our front door and coat-check volunteers will wear a masks.
  • Our experience from the Sundance Stompede confirmed the superb protection that high-quality masks provide (i.e. N95, KN95, KF94) in a one-way mask-optional environment.
  • Wastewater data suggests that Covid transmission in San Francisco is approaching 10% of its peak last May. With no new variants on the horizon, we expect the numbers to continue to fall.
  • We still expect 95% or more of our attendees to be fully-vaccinated.

Safety Policies and Protocols

Our policies and protocols related to Covid-19 have been a constant work in progress. Our aim is to create as safe and comfortable an environment as we can, while acknowledging that it is impossible to eliminate risk completely. The following is effective as of September 4, 2022:

Vaccination. Sundance Saloon no longer requires attendees to be fully vaccinated.

Face masks. Masks are strongly advised, but not required. If you wear a mask, we recommend N95, KN95, or KF94 for the best protection against Covid.

Screening. We ask you to stay home if you have any symptoms or signs of Covid or MPox, or have been diagnosed recently with Covid or MPox.

Ventilation and filtration. We have numerous industrial-sized HEPA-13 air purifiers to add to the natural ventilation achieved through the club's open doors, floor fans, and roof fans. We monitor CO2 levels and estimate our air exchange per hour equivalent exceeds hospital standards of 12 ACH.

Hand sanitizer. We have hand sanitizer available and spread throughout the club.

What about MPox?

While MPox is a serious public health concern, it appears to be primarily transmitted by prolonged skin-to-skin contact, most typically from male-to-male sexual contact. We are not taking specific precautions at Sundance Saloon other than the precautions we already have in place for Covid-19. We are also encouraged that case numbers in San Francisco have been declining dramtically since early August.

We do ask that if you have any symptoms or rash (which can be just a few lesions), that you get tested and stay home. If you have concerns and wish to be as safe as possible, you might consider wearing long-sleeved clothing, wearing a high-quality mask, and using hand sanitizer or hand-washing frequently.
